Why does a JPG trace worse than a PNG?

JPEG compression leaves blocks and speckles around every edge, and a tracer turns each speckle into a tiny shape the laser burns one by one. Cleaning the picture first fixes it: turn it into pure black and white, remove specks smaller than a pixel or two, then trace. This converter does that before the two-tone styles trace.

Can I turn a photo into an SVG for laser engraving?

A simple object on a plain background, yes: silhouette or poster style gives clean shapes. A portrait or a busy scene becomes blotches as a vector. For photo engraving, engrave the photo itself as a picture, or turn it into dots with the halftone tool.

What does the converter do to the JPG before tracing?

The browser scales it to at most 1,024 pixels on the long side. For the silhouette and line sketch styles it also turns it into pure black and white with an automatic threshold and removes specks and pinholes, so JPEG noise never reaches the tracer.

Which style should I use?

Silhouette for one shape to cut or engrave, line sketch for drawings and scans, flat colour when the picture has two or three clear tones, poster when you want more tonal detail for engraving.

What sizes and formats do I get?

An SVG with its width and height in millimetres, the width you type and the height from the picture's proportions. The same trace also downloads as a DXF or a LightBurn .lbrn2 project.

Is my picture kept?

No. It is sent to our server only to be traced, is processed in memory and is not stored. Everything after the trace happens in your browser.
