What makes a DXF good for laser cutting?

A good laser DXF has closed shapes, real units and nothing extra. Every outline should be a closed polyline so the software treats it as a shape it can cut or fill, the header should state millimetres so it imports at size, and each job belongs on its own layer. Curves are stored as short straight segments, fine enough that the laser cannot tell.

How it works

  1. Drop the picture

    PNG, JPG, WebP or GIF. High contrast and clear edges give the cleanest outlines.

  2. Pick a style and the detail

    Silhouette gives the fewest, cleanest shapes; lower the detail for a file that cuts faster.

  3. Set the width

    Type the finished width in millimetres; the DXF carries millimetre units, so it imports at that size.

  4. Download the DXF

    Each job is its own layer: cut in red, engrave in white or black depending on your software's theme.

Questions makers ask

Why does my DXF import at the wrong size?

The DXF header stores the drawing units. A file without them makes the software guess inches or millimetres, and a 100 mm part arrives at 100 inches or 3.9 mm. This DXF writes millimetres into the header.

Does the DXF keep curves?

Curves are flattened into short straight segments that stay within 0.05 mm of the true curve, far below the width of a laser beam. Every laser program and CAM tool reads polylines, which is not true of every curve type DXF has.

Can a DXF hold an engraving?

It holds the engraved shapes as closed outlines on their own layer; your software fills them when you set that layer to fill or scan. DXF has no fills of its own, so for engraving an SVG or a LightBurn project is the more direct file.

Which programs open it?

LightBurn, RDWorks, xTool Studio, Inkscape, Fusion, FreeCAD and other CAD and CAM tools read DXF polylines. The file uses the AutoCAD R14 format, which almost everything supports.

Is my picture kept?

No. It is traced on our server in memory and not stored; the DXF is written in your browser.
