SVG to laser file: layers, true size and a check

Quick answer

Why does an SVG import at the wrong size in LightBurn or xTool Studio?

SVG has no physical size unless the file states its width and height in real units. Without them the software assumes a resolution, usually 72 or 96 DPI, and a 60 mm design arrives at 45 or 80 mm. Exporting with explicit millimetre dimensions and a matching viewBox removes the guess.

Questions makers ask

What do the colours mean in a laser file?

By convention a red hairline is a cut, a blue hairline is a score and a black fill is an engraving. LightBurn puts every colour on its own layer when it imports an SVG, so one setting per colour covers the whole file.

What does the check look for?

Text that was never converted to paths, cut paths that are not closed, parts that hang on a join thinner than 1 mm or drop out entirely, details thinner than your kerf, shapes that reach past the sheet and files that came without a physical size.

Does it write laser settings into the file?

Into the LightBurn project, yes: speed, power, passes and the scan interval for each layer, taken from published tables for your machine and material and marked as published or estimated. SVG cannot carry settings, so they are added as a comment and can be copied as a card for xTool Studio.

Is my SVG uploaded?

No. SVG files are read and exported in your browser. Only a picture you ask to be traced is sent to the tracer, and it is not kept.
